JAWS 7.10 has a new Installation Process

From JAWS 7.10, Freedom Scientific will be utilizing a brand new installer. The new installer is being implemented to help streamline installation and to make the JAWS Install compatible with the upcoming Windows Vista operating system. The new WiX installer will also allow Freedom Scientific to be able to provide online update patches for JAWS, thus allowing Freedom Scientific to add features to JAWS, or to correct bugs more frequently.

The new installer will now make a ticking sound while the program is being installed to let the JAWS user know that the install is taking place. Some of the dialogues do differ from the previous JAWS Installer, but they are not confusing. Just take the time to carefully listen to the JAWS Install instructions and you should find the new install process straight forward. Other installation changes include the following:

  • The Eloquence synthesizer is automatically installed as a separate product. All Eloquence languages are installed.
  • The JAWS Talking Installer (used to provide speech during installation) is automatically installed as a separate product.
  • DAISY training books are installed as separate products. They are not automatically installed by the JAWS product installer, but are available to install.
  • The Sentinel System driver for dongle support is automatically installed for dongle and ILM versions of JAWS.

Once you have installed JAWS 7.10 on to your computer, you can check for available updates to JAWS, by bringing up the JAWS help menu and choosing the “Check for Updates” option.

JAWS then checks to see if any updates are available and displays a list for you to choose from. The list of updates includes the file size and details about what the update contains. You can then choose to download and install any of the new software versions in order to keep JAWS up-to-date by checking its check box. Do not have any other programs open when you check for updates, as JAWS will begin installing the update as soon as it has downloaded.

Please note that Internet access and administrative rights are required to check for updates.

Internet License Manager (ILM Activation)

Internet License Manager (ILM) is the relatively new licensing scheme that all Freedom Scientific products are moving to.

There are differences between ILM and the old Quella (floppy disk based) authorisation. The main difference is that currently under the ILM scheme, there is no way to get the auth key back. You can remove it from a system by going to Start Menu, Programs, JAWSxxx, Tools, Remove Activation. JAWSxxx represents your JAWS version number, E.G. JAWS7.1.

Single user licenses now get 3 keys, while Multi-users get one.

You can use ILM to activate JAWS using an Internet connection. This is the easiest and quickest way to activate your product.

When you first start JAWS, you are asked to activate the program. You can also begin the activation process by opening the JAWS Help menu and choosing Update Authorisation. To activate JAWS using the Internet, do the following:

  1. In the Activation dialogue box, choose Start Activation.
  2. Read the message that displays and then choose Continue. Insert the Authorisation CD into your CD-ROM drive and choose Activate Using Authorisation CD.
  3. If you do not have your Authorisation CD, choose Enter Your Authorisation Number Manually.

Note: If you have previously inserted your Authorisation CD, you will not be asked to insert it again. Continue to step 4 of the activation.

  4. Choose Activate.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Now, Using the Internet (RECOMMENDED), and then press ENTER.
  6. If you used your Authorisation CD, your 20-digit Authorisation number is automatically inserted into the Authorisation Number edit box.
  7. If your Authorisation number is not shown type it into the edit box. You can find your Authorisation number in print and braille on your JAWS CD sleeve.
  8. Press ENTER to continue. You will be asked to connect to the Internet if you have not already done so. You must establish an Internet connection before continuing with the activation.
  9. If you have not registered JAWS, you are asked to do so now. Registering JAWS lets you receive technical support. Choose Register Now and complete the online registration form by following the instructions provided.
  10. After you submit your registration, ILM attempts to activate JAWS. This process may take several minutes. When the activation is successful, choose Finish.

Note: If ILM cannot activate JAWS because of your firewall, which is quite common, do the following.

  1. Complete steps 1 to 3 above.
  2. Use the arrow keys to select Telephone to Receive Activation by Mail, and then press ENTER.
  3. On the next screen that appears, you will see your 20 character authorisation code shown, (if you have inserted your authorisation CD), if not type it in manually. You will also see your systems unique locking code and a message telling you to visit http://www.fsactivate.com.
  4. Keep the activation window open and in your browser, go to http://www.fsactivate.com. Click the continue button, then on the next page, click the "Retrieve an Activation License code based on your Authorisation number and Locking code" link.
  5. Copy and paste your 20 character authorisation number and locking code from the activation window into the form provided, then click submit.
  6. The next page that appears shows you your license code. Copy and paste the license code from the web page in to the license code edit field in the activation window and click next.
  7. You should see a message saying that your activation was successful.

Quantum’s JAWS Tip - The AutoFilter in MS Excel

You may have a large amount of data in your Excel worksheet. You may want to show only the records that you specify. Filtering temporarily hides rows you do not want displayed. The auto filter allows you to format chart and print your filtered range without rearranging or moving it.

AutoFilter arrows appear to the right of the column labels in the filtered range. Microsoft Excel indicates the filtered items with blue.

  1. Go to the column with the data you wish to filter.
  2. Press alt+D (data menu) then F for filter then F to access the autofilter.
  3. Ensure you are on your title row and press ALT+down arrow. This command will put you in a combo box where you can select the data you wish to filter.
  4. Press enter to activate.
  5. If the autofilter is on JAWS will indicate by saying “autofilter checked” To turn auto filter off press enter.

Alternatively, JAWS has provided a hot key for auto filter which is ctrl+shift+A which activates the auto filter for selected cells. The cursor is placed in a list box from which All, Top 10, or Custom options can be selected.

For more information on filtering use your Help in MS Excel.
