Technology for students with a print disability
Quantum Technology offers a broad range of assistive technology solutions to students with a print disability. Assistive technology empowers students who are blind, vision impaired, or have a learning disability with the tools to gain independent and immediate access to educational materials.
Finding the right solution
Quantum Technology understands that the needs of our customers are diverse. We have a number of options available that allow people to choose the solution that is right for them. One option is a free one week trial of the full versions before purchase. This way, our customers can be sure that the solution they have picked is best for them.
Alternate format production
A common requirement of all students with a print disability is the ability to convert information into a format that meets their individual needs. The Dolphin Converter is a software program that enables electronic files or scanned material to be converted into audio files, Daisy files, large print, text or Braille. It provides a very simple user interface that controls the conversion of a document into most formats required in a school or university setting.
Solutions for students with learning disabilities
WYNN is the leading software program designed to aid individuals with cognitive disabilities such as dyslexia. WYNN provides bi-modal access (visual and auditory enhancements) to any type of electronic information (scanned, WEB, Word, PDF etc). WYNN can speak out text whilst simultaneously highlighting the spoken words. Dolphin Easy Tutor is another low cost option for people with Learning Disabilities needing bi-modal access within a Windows environment.
Solutions for students who have low vision
Magnification and speaking software for computers
Magnification software enlarges images on computer screens to a size that is readable for people with low vision. It also provides the user with options to enhance the mouse pointer and cursor. The software will speak out and track icons, menus and text in word-processor documents and Web pages, as well as speaking the user’s typing.
Print magnification
Electronic magnifiers are appliances that display a magnified and/or enhanced image of printed materials (e.g. textbooks and coursework) either in monochrome or full colour. The ClearView+ range have built-in 19” flat panel screens, whilst the PC version uses your existing computer’s monitor. These units are used by a broad range of students in a permanent location. There is also a range of portable options, as well as devices such as the ClearNote+ that will produce a magnified/enhanced image onto a laptop.Solutions for students who are blind
Screen reading software
Screen readers grab information from the computer screen and send it to a speech synthesizer. The synthesizer then produces the information in clear, understandable speech output. Using this technology, students who are blind can listen to the content of documents such as articles, journals and web pages to promote independence in researching, editing and submitting of course work.
Translation and scanning software: Turn print into speech or braille
Monty! and Duxbury are software programs that enable the user to quickly convert text to Braille. OpenBook scanning software is used in conjunction with an ordinary flatbed scanner. Once the required printed material is scanned, OpenBook transforms the image into text, which can be spoken using synthetic speech or translated into Braille.
Braille, Braille displays & Braille note takers
For students whose literacy medium is Braille, there is a wide array of devices for producing hard copy Braille (embossers), having Braille access to a PC Braille display or a stand-alone Braille note-taker . The Mountbatten Brailler allows students to produce a Braille copy of their notes or items essential to learning, such as course outlines.
Tactile graphics maker for access to graphs & diagrams
The Piaf (Pictures in a Flash) produces high quality tactile graphics using heat sensitive capsule paper. The raised images are easy to produce and ideal for communicating graphical ideas and information.
We also run various scholarship programs to assist students.
